It is law within the UK that every item of precious metal sold such as Platinum, Gold, Silver is stamped labelling the item with the type of metal it is. Platinum pieces which weigh less than 0.5 grams, 18ct Gold and Palladium pieces weighing less than 1.0 gram and Silver pieces weighing less than 7.78 grams are except from hallmark.
At Diamonds Factory all our products are hallmarked as per UK hallmarking law from London Assay Office (The GoldSmith Company)
The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office is the oldest assay office in the United Kingdom. It has provided hallmarking services since The Goldsmiths' Company was founded in the 1300s. The company received its royal charter in 1327 and ranks 5th in order of precedence of the 12 Great Livery Companies of the City of London.
Hallmarking dates back to the 1300s when Edward I of England passed a law requiring any item made of silver, which was offered for sale, to be at least of equal quality as that of the coin of the realm (silver currency). The wardens of The Goldsmiths' Company were tasked with visiting workshops in the City of London to assay (test) silver articles. If these articles were found to be below standard they were originally destroyed and the metal forfeited to the King. If they passed, each article received the King's mark of authentication - the mark of a leopard's head. By 1478, there were several hundred workshops and merchants manufacturing silver articles in the City of London. It was not possible for the wardens to visit them all so the merchants were ordered to bring their items to Goldsmiths' Hall for testing and marking and a permanent Assay Office was established in the building. This is the origin of the term hallmark - struck with the King's mark at Goldsmiths' Hall.
In 1544 the Goldsmith's Company adopted the King's mark as their town mark and the mark of the leopard's head is now internationally recognised as the mark of this assay office.
The Goldsmiths's Company Assay Office is still based at Goldsmiths's Hall and remains the oldest company in Britain to be continually trading from the same site. However, it also has two satellite offices; at Greville Street in Hatton Garden in the heart of the London jewellery quarter and within a high security complex near London's Heathrow airport. It now has a new off-site facility within the Dalston-based jewellery manufacturer, Allied Gold. This is the first time in the Assay Office's 700 year history that it has opened permanent hallmarking services on a customer's premises.
In addition to hallmarking, the office has now expanded its range of services to support the jewellery trade and enforcement authorities. It offers a variety of specialist analytical services including nickel, lead & cadmium testing, antique silver dating, non-destructive compositional analysis, plating thickness measurement and a melt and assay service for scrap precious metal carried out in their fully independent on-site laboratory. Other services offered are a jewellery valuation service, laser marking, trading standards assistance, high quality photography and a comprehensive range of training and educational seminars, lectures and specialist events.
Are you searching for a unique gift idea for the special April baby in your life? Birthstone jewellery is an ideal gift choice for any occasion, especially birthdays. As the traditional birthstone of April, diamonds are considered the “king of all birthstones” for a good reason! Adding a sense of beauty and light wherever they’re situated, diamonds have garnered the hearts of many and are undoubtedly the most sought-after gemstones known to man.
In this blog, we’ll explore all there is to know about April’s birthstone, the precious diamond. As well as April’s birthstone meaning and origins, we’ll look at some April birthstone facts, important care and maintenance tips, and finally, the best diamond gifts to buy an April baby. Let’s dive in.
Why is April a diamond?
It’s not entirely clear how specific months became associated with various gemstones, but the diamond has been known as April’s traditional birthstone since the Middle Ages. Other gemstones associated with April include sapphires, opals, white topaz and quartz, with the latter being also popular diamond alternatives.
April birthstone meaning
Those lucky enough to call April their birth month are generally regarded as caring and successful individuals who can achieve lasting love in their relationships. Known as the “love stone”, diamonds are thought to provide their wearer with improved relationships by enhancing honesty and longevity in their partnerships.
Further, since diamonds are the strongest of all precious gemstones, they are perceived to increase the inner strength of those who wear them. The word “diamond” derives from the Greek word “Adamas”, which means indestructible!
Along with these benefits, wearing diamonds is also purported to offer increased clarity, balance and abundance, as well as a boost in energy when worn with other crystals such as amethyst. In the Middle Ages, diamonds were believed to hold healing powers and were able to cure ailments arising from the brain and pituitary gland. When heated and taken to bed, they were thought to draw harmful and crippling toxins from the body.
Where does the April birthstone originate from?
Due largely to their rarity, diamonds are considered one of the most valuable materials known to man — they can usually only be located around 150 km beneath the earth’s surface. Diamonds can take between one billion and more than three billion years to form naturally, and their originating countries have changed over time.
Starting in the 1400s, India was the world’s earliest source of diamonds, with Indian diamonds being sold in various European trade centres. When Indian diamond supplies began to diminish in the 1700s, Brazil became the next major diamond source. This continued until the late nineteenth century with the discovery of a sizable diamond reserve in South Africa.
These days, diamonds are mined from various countries around the globe. At Diamonds Factory, our diamonds are ethically sourced and purchased from leading diamond trading centres around the globe.
Interesting facts about the April birthstone
Diamonds have long captured the imagination of people from all over the world. Did you know:
Diamonds have a truly impressive composition, being the only gemstone on earth made entirely from a single element — carbon.
Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring material on the planet — they are 58 times harder than any other natural material.
Despite pure diamonds being transparent and colourless, diamonds occur in all colours of the rainbow — this is a result of trace elements interacting with the carbon atoms during the natural creation process.
The rarity of the diamond can be seen in the average diamond mine yield statistics — on average, only one part diamond is found for every one million parts of host rock found.
The earliest known use of a diamond engagement ring dates back to 1477 when Mary of Burgundy received a ring featuring her initial spelled out in diamonds from Archduke Maximilian of Austria.
What is the value of April’s birthstone?
Being the exclusive and prestigious diamond, the value of April’s birthstone is high. A considerable level of craftsmanship and expertise is required to cut diamonds — their unique hardness makes them notoriously difficult to shape and cut, even for experts in the field. Also, as it naturally exists in minuscule sizes, it can be difficult to source in one-carat sizes — all of these qualities make the diamond all the more precious. Having said this, diamonds can vary significantly in price, based on the 4 C’s — colour, cut, clarity and carat, so it’s best to consult a trusted jeweller like Diamonds Factory to design a piece to your needs and preferences.
How to care for the April birthstone
Thankfully, caring for the April birthstone is relatively easy due in large part to the hardness of the diamond. To keep diamonds at their sparkling best, they should be cleaned once a fortnight — all that’s needed is warm water, mild soap, a soft toothbrush, and a delicate lint-free cloth.
After soaking in soapy water for a few moments, clean the front and back of the diamond with the toothbrush, then wipe it dry with the lint-free cloth. Though it’s near impossible to break a diamond, the setting or prongs around the stone can be broken. Therefore, it’s essential not to handle your diamond pieces too roughly when cleaning and other activities.
